How to Become a Consultant for Backyard Ideas

Backyard consultants are sometimes referred to as landscape architects. They plan out how the landscape of a yard should be set up. Many landscape architects take part in the construction of the backyard landscape and others choose to only provide the ideas, letting a construction or landscaping crew do the actual work.

  • Attend an accredited college and graduate with a degree in landscape architecture and design or another similar degree. While you do not necessarily need a degree to become a consultant for backyard ideas, many clients will be looking to hire someone that has received a good education and has adequate experience with the work.

  • Check with your state's Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Board. This board is a non-profit agency that provides the Landscape Architect Registration Exam. This exam will allow you to become certified as a landscape architect. While certification is not necessary, it will be a good addition to your work portfolio.

  • Advertise your services online and in newspapers. You may want to make flyers, business cards or other promotional material. You may also consider lowering your fees at first to bring in new customers. Advertising will draw people in to your business and provide them with contact information for your business or services.

  • Search for jobs in your local newspaper or online. Many people will post services needed in the "Help Wanted" section of the classified ads. Be sure to get the specific requirements for the job. Discuss the fees and time in which the backyard project should be completed.

  • Build a portfolio with examples of your ideas and past projects. When a client contacts you to act as a consultant, they may ask to see examples of your work. Include copies of you diploma and Landscape Architect certification. Be sure to include any references in your portfolio as well.
