How to Become a Criminal Justice Online University Professor

A criminal justice online university professor teaches criminal justice courses through online distance learning institutions. Job duties include posting online content, planning course curriculum, evaluating student progress and assisting with technical support. An online professor still needs a graduate degree to teach online courses.

  • Complete your high school diploma. Aspiring online professors need a GED or high school diploma to further their education. Students can get an early start by taking computer courses and classes related to the major.

  • Obtain a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. A bachelor program helps in learning foundational skills for online teaching, such as student assessments, educational technology and curriculum planning. Students can participate in volunteer and intern programs to gain experience as well.

  • Get a graduate's degree. Online professors need a Master’s in Education to teach online courses. The degree of choice depends on the individual student's career path. Students have the option of completing a doctoral or master program. Graduate programs teach how to use technological innovations and educational research in lesson plans.

  • Supplement degree programs with an online teaching certificate. A certificate looks good on a resumé when applying for online teaching jobs. A program takes nine to 18 hours to complete and can be done while in the graduate program. Courses include online curriculum development, web 2.0 networking, content delivery systems, web-based learning psychology and instructional site design.

  • Join the United State Distance Learning Association. Organizations like USDLA allow for online professors to meet and make contacts. Members are also invited to attend conferences for updates and training on new trends in distance learning.
