How to Become a Makeup and Beauty Artist
While there is no specific educational training required to become a makeup artist, it can take years of experience in order to build up a professional portfolio and make a successful career of it. There are a variety of avenues that one can take to gain valuable experience.
- Attend cosmetology school. Although it is not required to become a licensed cosmetologist in order to become a makeup artist, the knowledge obtained in school can prove to be quite valuable in the future. Look for schools that offer specialized instruction in makeup applications and techniques.
- Get a job in cosmetics. Get in on the ground floor and start out working as a consultant at a cosmetic store, kiosk or makeup counter in a department store. These areas have lots of traffic which will provide a variety of clientele with various facial shapes and skin tones to work with.
- Stay abreast of the latest trends. Read fashion magazines and watch videos by professional makeup artists to stay current.
- Work on a portfolio. It can be as simple as working on family and friends in the beginning. Be sure to take before and after shots of all work.
- Start building clientele. One great way to do this is to throw a beauty party and offer free makeovers for people. Another great idea is to offer makeover services at a teenager's birthday or slumber party. Word of mouth is essential in this business, so be prepared to hand out business cards and brochures at the party.
- Look for seminars and workshops in the area. Sign up for beauty trade shows and make sure to network with professionals in attendance.
