How to Become an Equine Veterinarian

Someone who enjoys working with horses may want to choose a career as an equine veterinarian. A student must first obtain an undergraduate degree in order to gain acceptance into a veterinary school. After graduating veterinary school, the student will then have to pass a medical examination to begin working as an equine veterinarian.

  1. Read up on equine veterinary medicine to learn about the different career options. Look online to find information, or speak with one of your high school career counselors. You can also meet with a veterinarian in your city. Ask questions from a variety of sources to help you decide if being a veterinarian is right for you.

  2. Take classes in college that will prepare you for veterinary school. Meet with your academic advisor to decide which degree will be the best one to help you get ready for a career as an equine veterinarian. Once you are nearing the end of your first four years of college, start to look into veterinary schools to continue your education.

  3. Apply to a veterinary school and take the entrance exam. Try to find an internship in the summer before you start veterinary school. Ask your undergraduate advisor to help you find an internship, if necessary. Working as an intern can help you to decide if you are choosing the right career.

  4. Complete your veterinary school education. Sign up to take the exam that you need in order to practice veterinary medicine in your state. Once you pass the exam you will become a licensed veterinarian.

  5. Look for work in your state with a company that specializes in equine care. Use a headhunter or an employment placement agency if you need assistance. After you practice veterinary medicine for a while, you can then decide whether you want to continue working at the facility or to open your own private equine veterinary clinic.
