How to Become a Holistic Veterinarian

A holistic veterinarian uses alternative methods to treat pets and animals. These methods can include herbs, acupuncture and other treatments that are the least invasive. Becoming a holistic veterinarian is a long process that will take quite a few years to complete from start to finish.

  1. Choose an accredited four year college. Do your best to get good grades; your hard work will pay off when you apply to vet school. Take classes such as biology and other classes offered that will be useful to you later in your career.

  2. Volunteer to work with vets, zoos or animal shelters. This can help you when you apply to veterinary school. If you can find a vet to volunteer with that practices holistic medicine, that would be a big help to you in your future career.

  3. Find a veterinary school to apply to and get into that school. You may want to look for a school that offers holistic medicine courses. Not all do, so you will have to check around. You will spend the next four years working toward your DVM, doctorate of veterinary medicine.

  4. Pass your exam in order to get your license. Check with your state for another other certifications you might need in addition to your exam.

  5. Obtain certifications through the following organizations: Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy, International Veterinary acupuncture society, American Veterinary Chiropractic Society and the Veterinary Botanical Medical Association. The more certifications you receive, the better for your career.

  6. Join organizations that deal with the process of holistic veterinary, such as the American Holistic Veterinary Association and the American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition.
