How to Measure for Replacement Casement Windows

How to Build Casement Windows DIY

Casement windows open in and out rather than sliding up and down on a track. Because of this they are often used in places where getting leverage on windows is usually difficult. They employ a system of cranks for operation. The units can be purchased as prehung pieces that can fit into the rough opening.

Supplies

  • Tape measure

  • Hammer

  • Pry bar

  • Casement window unit

  • Insulation

  • Level

  • Wooden shims

  • Screwgun

  • Caulk gun

  • Trim nails

  1. Measure the inner frame of the rough opening for the width and height at three points. For the height, measure across the top, in the middle and across the bottom. Repeat this process for the width, instead measuring from left to right. Record the measurements as you work. Always use the smallest measurement for both height and width.

  2. Subtract 1/2-inch from each of the smallest measurements. Purchase the new window based on this figure. Select the location of the crank and which direction you want the window to open.

  3. Take the trim off the interior of the old window with a pry bar and a hammer and carefully remove it.

  4. Pull out the window portions of the old window and remove the frame.

  5. Put the new window unit on the sill and lift it into the opening.

  6. Put pieces of insulation around the outer rim between the jamb and the unit as you work. The new window will rest against the exterior trim of the opening.

  7. Use a level to make sure the window is straight and plumb before fastening it permanently. Install any necessary shims during this leveling process.

  8. Insert the screws into the unit by placing them through the pre-drilled holes in the window flange. Tighten with a screwgun.

  9. Use a hammer to reinstall the interior window trim.

  10. Seal the window with caulking to prevent air leaks.
