How to Build Deck Stairs on Your Own

How to Build Deck Stairs

Once your deck construction is complete you should select a design for your deck stairs. Building your own deck stairs is an inexpensive alternative to purchasing ready-made stairs. The following is a simple yet easy to follow design for a sturdy set of deck stairs.

How to Build Deck Stairs:

Step 1: Determine your measurements. Begin by measuring the deck's height. Divide this measurement by six. The result is the quantity of individual steps you need for your stairs.

Step 2: Determine the required measurements for the stairs. Measure the step from front to back and multiply by two. This will result in the correct measurement for each step.

Step 3: Pour the concrete for the foundation while installing a kicker plate.

Step 4: Transfer your measurements onto your wood using a framing square. Cut the wood to the appropriate dimensions with a circular saw.

Step 5: Angle the irons with the lag screws by attaching stringer stops to all exposed joists that have screws.

Step 6: Cut the step risers to the appropriate stairway width. You should leave at least a 3/4 inch overlap. Secure the risers with screws.
