How to Build Reptile Enclosures
Once you have made the decision to purchase a reptile as a pet, you must purchase or create an enclosure for it. Aquariums and other enclosures are rather expensive, and some range up to $100 or more in price. Consider creating your own reptile enclosure at a fraction of the cost.
Step 1: Determine the dimensions of the enclosure. Considering that acrylic sheets are manufactured in sheets measuring 4-by-8-feet, use this measurement to determine how many acrylic sheets you need and the required measurements. Research the reptile and determine its approximate size once it is fully grown. Ensure that the dimensions of the enclosure will accommodate the reptile at full size.
Step 2: Order acrylic sheets based on the dimensions you arrived at in Step 1. Have the dealer cut the sheets to fit into these measurements, if necessary.
Step 3: Connect the sides to the base of the enclosure with masking tape. Ensure that each side lines up straight.
Step 4: Remove the protective paper from the acrylic. Using silicone sealant, seal the sides and based together. Allow up to 48 hours for the sealant to dry.
Step 5: Using a drill, create ventilation holes in the lid. Do not make large holes in which the reptile could slide through.
Step 6: Connect the hinges to the lid with the sealant. Allow it to dry for at least 48 hours.
Step 7: Connect the lid hinges to the enclosure, using the silicone sealant. Allow up to 48 hours for the sealant to dry completely.
