How to Build Ponds and Water Features in Landscaping

Ponds and other water features can add a nice extra touch to anyone's landscape. Water features range from trickling waterfalls to full-size water gardens. Figuring out how to build ponds and water features in landscaping can be tricky. However, if the builder takes a little time to examine their needs and wants the project can go smoothly.

  1. Before starting to build a pond or waterfall, the homeowner should first consider the size, shape, and location of the water feature. If a small waterfall is being added to a rock garden, for example, then a small pond will also be needed to catch the water at the bottom. The builder should also consider if fish or plants will be added, and how much room they will require.

  2. After determining the size, shape, and location of the water feature, the builder should start to dig. A waterfall is built on a hill or sharp drop. A shallow trench is created where the water will flow down into the small pond. Ponds need to be dug out as evenly as possible to make lining them easier.

  3. Once the area is dug it will need to be lined. Pre-fabricated molds are available that can simply be set into the hole. Another method is for lining uses a sheet of plastic. The sheet should be placed in the hole as evenly as possible and can be anchored down with decorative rocks or stakes.

  4. Most ponds will need a filter or pump to help keep the water clean. If fish or plants are to be placed in the pond then a filter is a must. Waterfall water features will need a pump and hose. The pump is placed in the pond and the hose is run uphill beside the trench where the water will flow. The hose can be buried in the soil or hidden by rocks and plants.

  5. With the lining and equipment in place, it is time to add the water. The area and any hoses should be watched for leaks over the next several days. If no fish or plants are being added then the work is finished.

  6. If fish and plants are being added then the pond should be filled up twice and completely emptied before adding living organisms. This will ensure than any harmful chemicals and debris are removed from the pond. The plants should be planted in containers and then placed into the pond. The top of the containers can be protected from nibbling fish with small rocks.
