How to Build Patio Doors

The patio can be designed to become an extended entertaining space. It is important to have doors that operate effectively and allow free flow of traffic. Most patio doors are made of a large amount of glass but the styles are varied and you should choose a style that appeals most to you.

Tools and Materials:

  • The new door

  • Frames for the doors- 2x4s and 2x6s.

  • A hammer and nails – (3 inch galvanized and 1 & half inch nails)

  • Tape measure

  • A circular saw and a level

  • A crow bar and hand tools

  • Caulks and caulking guns

  • Silicone caulk

  • Combination squares

  • A drill

  • Dust mask and safety goggles.

  1. Look at magazines as great source for ideas on different types of patio doors. A sliding door is a good choice as it offers easy access and lets in adequate light and air.

  2. Mark out the position of the door allowing an extra 4 inches on each side for the studs and shim space and 7 inches on top for a header.

  3. Get someone to help with the heavy lifting. Brace up the wall to provide support while installing the jack studs and the header.

  4. Turn off the electricity to prevent electric shock.

  5. Place plastic sheeting on the floor to protect it and to collect dirt.

  6. Cut and chip away the plaster or drywall on the area you have marked, removing all the insulation and debris as you work.

  7. Drill marker holes in the wall. Draw lines to mark exactly where to remove the wall covering.

  8. Create the opening in the wall, preparing it for installation of the door.

  9. Assemble the door unit and place it from the outside of the structure. Get it into position making sure it is centered in the opening. Mark the area carefully.

  10. Place the unit back into position and secure it using screws onto the threshold floor.

  11. Using a level and square, shim the unit into place along the top and sides.

  12. Secure the door by putting screws in each of the holes. The screws should not be too tight as this can cause the framework to warp.

  13. Patch up the walls and apply the trimming. Remove the temporary bracing and clear up any flooring and other debris.
