How to Build a Brick Patio Fireplace

A brick outdoor fireplace on a patio will make a great addition to any home. You will enjoy many nights outdoors sitting next to your warm fireplace. Building a brick patio fireplace yourself will save you a lot of money.

Things You'll Need:

  • Shovel

  • Cement

  • Wooden Forms

  • Steel Sheeting

  • Bricks

  • Brick Mortar

  • Level

  1. Decide where you want to install the fireplace by looking at the surroundings of your patio. You don't want to build the fireplace near trees or large plants because they could easily catch fire. Also try finding a spot if possible where the wind won't be blowing the smoke into your face.

  2. Dig a hole about four feet deep where you want to build the fireplace with a shovel. Place wooden forms around the perimeter of the hole.

  3. Fill the hole with cement and allow it at least a couple days to dry before continuing the project. This will be the base of your fireplace so make sure it's high enough to reach from your patio. You might have to build the forms high so it reaches the top of your patio.

  4. Build the walls around your cement base with bricks and brick mortar. You should be able to find a variety of brick colors and patterns at a local home improvement store. Also make sure to use a level when building the walls so they stay straight.

  5. Attach a steel sheet over the top of the fireplace walls with brick mortar. Attach one final layer of bricks over the steel sheet to finish the fireplace.
