How to Build a Chimney Top
Chimneys are usually used in the home for venting out smoke from the fireplace inside of the home to outside of the home. A chimney cap is needed for sealing the flue shot when the fireplace is not being used. Here are directions on building your own chimney top.
What you will need:
- Welding tools
- Tape measure
- Gloves
- Sheet metals sheers (you can use comparable saw components instead)
- Thick wire mesh
- Sheet metal (stainless steel, copper, or similar metal)
- Zip ties
- To get an idea of the construction of the chimney top, first measure the top of your chimney. Measure how long the top is and how thick it is and write down these measurements.
- Cut out metal sheets according to your measurements. You will need four strips of metal sheets to go on top of the chimney and four equally sized strips to hold the mesh top in place.
- Weld each pair of the metal sheets together to form even 90-degree angles to make the base. The welding is done along the long sides of the sheet.
- Once the pairs have finished being welded, set them up to look like the top of your chimney then weld the corners together.
- Cut out mesh that is the same length as the inner rectangle metal sheets you welded together then cut a mesh rectangle that is the same size as the inner rectangle.
- Weld each piece of mesh to the matching sides, then weld the corners.
- Position the mesh rectangle that you cut out and after positioning it on top, and weld it in place.
- Cut out sheet metal that is one inch larger than your inner rectangle all the way around and weld it to the top of the mesh. Then bend the edges down a bit.
- To install the chimney top either use adhesive or drill holes to the base and attach with anchors.
