How to Build a Deck for a Jon Boat
If you're tired of scaring fish away by the noise that a Jon boat sends off, a simple solution to this problem is to install a deck inside the boat. The deck will serve as a buffer to some of the noise that the boat gives off and stop notifying the fish of your arrival.
What You'll Need:
- Circular saw
- Plywood
- Wood sealer
- Paintbrush
- 1-inch self-adhesive insulation strips
- Carpenter's chalk line
- Carpet knife
- Staple gun
- Measuring tape
- Using your measuring tape, measure the bottom of your Jon boat. Even though the sides of the Job boat are curved, the bottom is often time routinely flat and rectangular.
- Depending on the size of your boat, you may need to lay one or more sheets of plywood on the ground. Transfer the measurements you previously took to the plywood. If you have more than one piece, use carpenter's chalk line to snap the measurements into place.
- Cut the plywood on the chalk line using a circular saw. This is the best tool to complete this step because it doesn't bend or twist while cutting. Using a paintbrush, paint the decking with wood sealer. Pay particular attention to the edges of the plywood.
- Lay out a 1-inch thick piece of self-adhesive insulation strip across the bottom of the boat. Repeat this step every 10-inches.
- Place the plywood decking on the top of the insulation strips. If you wish, you can carpet the deck. Cut a piece of carpet that is slightly larger than each piece of the plywood. Turn the edges of carpet downward under the bottom of the plywood and pull the carpet tight. Use a staple gun to secure it in place. Insert the carpeted deck into the bottom of the boat.
