How to Build a Fashionable Wardrobe
Building a fashionable wardrobe takes knowledge and patience. Spending the time to learn about clothing and fashion trends can help fill your closet with gems that will be in style for years. Concentrate on the fashions best suited for your body and avoid any colors or trends that are unflattering.
- Research style and fashion. Subscribe to your favorite fashion magazines and concentrate on articles guiding you to clothing that works best for different body shapes. Read fashion blogs and follow the twitter feeds of your favorite designer. You may get updates about a sale or promotional discounts.
- Make a fashion bible. Cut out pictures from magazines of looks you like or think would be flattering. Later, when you are creating outfits, you can reference the book to see pairings, and which accessories really make an outfit pop.
- Evaluate your existing wardrobe and eliminate any pieces outdated or ill-fitting. If you must keep sentimental clothing, fold it away into a storage box with a few wooden cedar preservers.
- Keep your eyes open. Look for unique clothing and accessories everywhere. You can never tell where or when you'll find the perfect piece.
- Visit vintage and consignment shops frequently. The inventory changes on a near-daily basis and the prices are reasonable. Many designer pieces bought for a fraction of the cost. Before buying a gently used piece, check the seams and buttons and look for any stains or damage. Examine beadwork and labels.
- Buy out of season. Many designers discount pieces right after a season ends. Choose classic pieces that last for years; avoid anything too trendy that is only going to last one season.
- Add accessories to drastically alter the look of a piece of clothing. One dress can be worn multiple ways. For example, a well-fitted black dress can be worn with a denim jacket and flat sandals for a casual look, while the same dress can be worn with glittering jewelry and strappy heels for a cocktail party.
