How to Build a Jeweler's Workbench

It is a good idea to build a workbench to use whenever you are making jewelry.  This should be a place that is comfortable for you to sit at for a long period of time while you are in the creation process.  For this reason, you may wish to consider actually building your very own jeweler's workbench since it isn't very difficult to do.

  1. Choose which type of wood you would like to make your workbench out of.  The best ones are oak, cherry and beech.

  2. Create legs for your workbench that measure at least 4 feet tall.  Cut your pieces to size and then sand them if necessary.

  3. Decide on how big of a base you want for your workbench.  Use an electric drill to create small holes in all four corners of the underside of your base.  This is what will become your workbench.  The holes may need to be slightly chiseled in order to fit a screw head inside.

  4. Use a hammer to secure screw heads into each of the four holes you just created.  Insert them so that their sharp edge is sticking about halfway out.

  5. Use a drill to drill halfway down into the top of each of the legs.  Insert the screw into the bottom of your workbench.

  6. Put some wood glue inside of the holes, especially around the screw head.

  7. Insert your bench legs making sure to match the hole up with the screw.

  8. Twist and insert the legs firmly.  Be careful to make sure that it is even.

  9. Insert the other three legs in the same way that you just inserted this one.

  10. Make sure that all four legs are secured tightly to the bench.

  11. Sand the bench to make sure that there are no splinters or rough spots.

  12. Wipe off any glue that may still be there.

  13. Set your workbench upright on all four of its legs and allow the glue to dry.
