How to Build a Large Model Railroad Bridge

Adding a large model railroad bridge to your model railroad landscaping can be daunting but it is not as hard as you think. After creating a design, it is as matter of using a truss structure. A truss structure is both lightweight and strong.

  1. Research different bridge design and determine the look you want to create.  Draw out a pattern for the supporting structure.

  2. Use brass, wood and plastic to assemble the bridge parts you need. Plastruct makes a wide range of structural parts out of styrene and ABS, and the pieces are available at hobby and craft stores. If you choose wood, make sure to get basswood for the construction so that it can support the weight of the track and train.

  3. Cut basswood into uniform beams according to your plan. Use a razor saw or hacksaw for more precision and control.

  4. Assemble supports by gluing joints together with wood glue. Hold the pieces in place with clamps until the glue dries, usually overnight. Depending on the scale of your bridge, you may want to add a few tiny finishing nails to add additional support.

  5. Insert the support structures into the scenery beginning at one end of the layout and working towards the other. Make sure the distance is uniform and to scale.

  6. Add the track beams in sections after the bridge has been secured. Secure the track beams with glue.

  7. Let the structure dry for at least 24 hours before proceeding.

  8. Add the track sections to the completed bridge, connect the rails and test the track.
