How to Build a Patio Swing

A swing can greatly improve your outdoor experience and the look of your patio.  Building your own is not only less expensive than purchasing one, but also will make your time outdoors more fulfilling and fun knowing that you built it yourself.

Materials Needed

  • Electric drill

  • Circular saw

  • Miter saw

  • Measuring tape

  • Electric Sander

  • Paint brush with paint or stain

  • One by four lumber

  • Two by four lumber

  • #12 galvanized wood screws

  • 5/16 inch, four inch long eye bolts and corresponding nuts and washers

  • S hooks

1. Take the two by fours and cut two of them to 48 inches and two of them to 24 inches.

2. Drill two 3/16 holes at the end of the 48-inch piece.  Set up the two 24 inch pieces to be inside the two 48 inch pieces and connect these pieces together.

3.  Screw the #12 screws into the holes of the 24-inch piece.

4.  Cut one of the two-by-fours to 21 inches and lay it inside the frame in the same direction of the shorter sides.

5.  Drill two sets of holes into the frame and connect the frame to the brace.

6.  Cut two of the two-by-fours to 24 inches and make a 45-degree angle cut on one end of each board to make the seat rails.

7.  Cut another two by four to 45 inches and set it inside the rails on the other side of the board cut at an angle to make the top rail of the seat back.  Connect using the #12 screws.

8.  Connect the seat back and seat bottom using wood screws by drilling holes up at 45- degree angles from the bottom.

9.  Trim the one-by-four to 48 inches and create the slats for the swing and attach them to the frame you have built.

10.  Cut a two by four to 12 inches to create armrests.  Cut at 45 degrees on one side- that side should point towards the back of the frame.  Screw together starting from the bottom.

11.  Sand, paint or stain your swing as desired.

12.  Insert 5/16-inch bolts with lock washers three inches from front of each armrest.  This is where you will attach the S-hooks.
