How to Build a Patio Table From a Door
Tables made from doors are a captivating addition to any patio or deck. You can use an old door you already have lying around, or purchase one from a salvage yard or estate sale. Using a piano hinge on the door adds the usefulness of inside storage.
Things You'll Need:
- Wooden door
- Four 2-inch by 4-inch boards
- All-purpose cleaner
- Paper towels
- Power drill
- Wood screws
- Pencil
- Plywood sheet
- Wood glue
- Pre-made wooden table legs
- Piano hinge
- Sandpaper
- Stain or Paint
- Saw
- Clean the door using an all-purpose cleaner and a paper towel. You can use any type of door, just make sure it is weatherproofed for use outside.
- Measure the door and subtract one inch to two inches from the length and width. If you want a bigger lip, subtract more inches from the length and width.
- Cut the 2-inch by 4-inch boards and build a frame. The frame should be slightly smaller than your table measurements. Screw the frame pieces together securely.
- Place the frame on a piece of plywood and draw an outline around the frame.
- Cut the plywood on the line just drawn on the plywood.
- Apply wood glue to the top of the frame and place the plywood sheet on top. Press down gently and allow drying.
- Drill a hole into each corner, making sure to drill through both the plywood and the frame.
- Screw the table legs into each pre-drilled corner hole. Turn the table over and stand it on its legs.
- Attach the piano hinge to the top of the frame, and attach the other side of the hinge to the door.
- Sand the door, frame and legs with fine-grit sandpaper.
- Stain or paint the table as desired.
