How to Build a Playhouse Roof
Adding a roof onto a playhouse is the perfect way to give your child a shady enclosed place to play in addition to protecting the inside of the playhouse from sun and rain. In order to build a playhouse roof, you will need building materials and power tools.
What You Will Need
- (7) 2-by-4 boards
- Hammer
- Nails
- Table saw
- Plywood
- Ruler
- Three-tab shingles
- Lag bolts
- Tar paper
- Caulk
- Framing nails
- Roofing nails
- Cut down four of the two-by-fours until they are the length you will need. The ends of the boards should be cut at a 45-degree angle.
- Cut down the remaining two-by-four to the length of the playhouse roof. The ends of this board should be cut straight instead of angled. This will be the roof’s top beam.
- Nail two of the two-by-fours that are angled to the ends of each side of the center beam. This will make the frame of your roof.
- Place the roof frame on the top of your playhouse. Make sure the roof frame lines up correctly,
- Remove the roof frame from the playhouse.
- Drill holes into the railing of your playhouse.
- Attach the roof frame to the playhouse with lag bolts.
- Nail a two-by-four between the top beam of the roof frame and the railing. Repeat for the other side.
- Measure the sides of the roof. Use this measurement to cut your plywood to length.
- Attach the plywood to the roof’s frame with framing nails.
- Staple the tar paper to the entire roof.
- Attach the shingles to the roof of the playhouse with roofing nails. Begin at the bottom and work your way to the top of the roof.
- Cut the shingles down to size for the peak of the roof.
- Use caulk to cover any exposed nails.
