How to Build a Professional Kennel for Dogs
Building your own professional dog kennel will create an outdoor, or indoor space for your best friend to enjoy. The best thing about building your own dog kennel is that you have the freedom to make the kennel exactly the right size for your beloved dog.
Tools and Materials
- Tape Measure
- Fencing
- Fence Posts
- Fence Latch Kit
- Long Fence Posts
- Shovel
- Gate
- Basic hand tools including a Screwdriver
- Measure your kennel’s available property so you will know just how much fencing to purchase at the home improvement retailer. Choose a location with some sunlight and some shade. You can always create shade after the kennel is complete.
- Research your local code laws to make sure that there are no restrictions for kennels in your area.
- Consider the height of fencing that you need based on how high you need the fence to be when complete. You also need to consider the depth that the fence will need to be placed below the ground. Dogs love to dig and your kennel will not maintain your dog for very long once he or she figures out how to dig under the fencing.
- Dig a minimum of a one and a half foot trench all the way around the place where the fencing will be placed. This is the depth that the fencing will go into the ground so that your dog will not escape.
- Measure the locations for the fence posts and dig as far down as you deem necessary for the fence posts. Remember the fence posts need to be further down in the ground than the fencing in order to hold up the structure, so be sure to measure and dig to a proper depth.
- Call 811 before you dig to locate wires and cables below the ground.
