How to Build a Rock Garden

Nothing is more soothing and perfect for meditating than sitting out near a rock garden. Rock gardens can be built to look very attractive and well maintained. When deciding to build a rock garden, you want to choose attractive and beautiful stones that will accentuate the area. Make your area look natural by creating different types of designs and formations for your area.

Items To Create Your Rock Garden:

  • Rocks/Stones

  • Topsoil

  • Wheel Barrow

  • Plants

  1. Create your rock base. The base of the rock garden is the place where you will put rubble, and have your subsoil and any holes; you are planning for the area.

  2. Purchase soil mixture for your topsoil. Use equal parts of soil, coarse grit and peat. It is important to make sure these items are spread around evenly on the ground.

  3. Select your rocks.  Make sure you choose rocks in different sizes, shapes and colors. This will add a bit of style to your area. To move heavy stones, you may need to ask for assistance, or use a wheelbarrow to move your stones from location to location. Many quarries and garden centers are perfect locations to find attractive stones.

  4. Arrange your stones the way you want them to be in your garden area. Make sure you use careful planning. If your do it right the first time, you will not have to worry about re-doing it later. Mark out the site using string and try to improve drainage, if necessary.  You may need to dig a deeper hole and fill the hole with smaller stones and pebbles. Lay all stones at the base first. Put your soil and mixture around them. Make sure that each stone is set firmly before positioning the next stone by packing soil around the rock.

  5. Plant your plants and cover them with soil and a layer of clippings of stone. Make sure all the sides slope inward. You are now ready to sit and meditate around your rock garden.
