How to Build a Small Boat From Plywood
Constructing a small boat can be successfully accomplished using some plywood, lumber, and basic tools. Anyone with some moderate carpentry skills, tools, and some free time can construct a boat and can begin enjoying usage of their very own boat.
Anyone with moderate carpentry skills can construct a small boat using a couple of sheets of plywood, some 2x4’s, and a few free hours. A small watercraft can become a source of recreation, and relaxation, especially if mounted with an outboard motor. Gather some materials, and get started today.
Items you will need:
- 1 sheet of ¾ inch marine plywood
- 1 sheet of ¼ inch marine plywood
- 1x10 inch planking
- #12 Boat screws – 2 ½ inch length, 3 inch length, 6 inch length
- 2x4 piece of lumber
- Carpentry tools
- China marker
- Silicone caulk
- Latex primer
- Latex paint
- Paint brushes
- Work gloves
- Safety glasses
- Construct the boat ribs using 2x4 lumber. Cut the gussets in order to strengthen the joints of the ribs using the ¼ inch marine plywood. The ribs create the structure of the entire boat, and the transom is a reinforced rib, which supports the outboard motor.
- Construct the boat’s keel by cutting one of the 2x4’s according to the boat length. Cut a 2x4 to form the stem post, and attach it to the aft end of the keel using the 6 inch wood screws.
- Turn the ribs so that they are upside down, and attach the keel and stem post to the ribs. Begin the process with the transom and work forward. The ribs should be equally spaced and attached with #12 3 inch wood screws. Attach the last set of ribs should be attached at the forward end of the boat, and this will form the bow. Attach the keelson to the inside of the boat’s ribs using #12 6 inch screws.
- Attach the stringers along the bottom to the inside of the ribs, and then repeat to the outside of the ribs along the sides by using #12 3 inch wood screws.
- Cut the ¾ inch marine plywood in order to form the boat’s skin along the hull. Attach the plywood to the ribs and stringers using #12 3 inch screws. Once complete, fill all seams inside and outside with silicone caulk.
- Cut the 1x10 inch planking so that it fits in between the uprights of the ribs in order to form the seating for the boats. Attach the seating with #12 2 ½ inch screws. The top support section of the seat should be 3 ¼ inches below the top of the gunwales. The seat should be attached to the seat support using #12 2 ½ inch screws.
- Ensure the buoyancy of the boat by tying the boat off with no occupants. Observe the boat after two or three hours and see if any leaks materialize. Use a china marker to mark any leaks. Allow the boat to dry and then re-caulk the entire boat taking care to pay special attention to the marked leaks. Re-test the buoyancy again after allowing for the caulk to dry.
- Remove the boat from the water and allow it to dry for 24 hours. Prime and paint the boat. Allow the paint to dry according to the specific paint used.
- Begin enjoying your boat!
