How to Build a Tire Rack

Extra tires can take up precious storage space in your garage. Regular shelving often does not accommodate tires correctly, and tires sitting on the ground can pose a safety hazard and cause damage to the tire. These steps will result in your very own tire rack that can fit five standard tires or four racing tires per shelf, getting you one step closer to decluttering your garage.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Protective eye wear

  • Gloves

  • Tape measure

  • Pencil

  • Saw

  • Drill

  • Phillips drill bit

  • Level

  • Wood clamps

  • 24 2 1/2-inch wood screws

  • 24 3-inch wood screws

  • 7 10-foot 2x4 boards

  1. Put on protective eye wear and gloves.

  2. Measure, mark and cut six 22-inch 2x4 pieces and six 5-foot 2x4 pieces.

  3. Arrange the sections of wood to make three 5-foot by 22-inch rectangles. This can be done by ensuring the 22-inch pieces act as the ends on the rectangles.

  4. Secure the rectangles by screwing two 2 1/2-inch screws through the 22-inch pieces into the 5-foot pieces at each corner on all three rectangles.

  5. Measure, mark, and cut four 6-foot 2x4 pieces.

  6. Place one of the rectangles you just constructed on the floor. Stand one of the 6-foot 2x4 pieces upright inside the 22-inch side of the rectangle. Check that the piece is upright and straight with the level and adjust if necessary. Clamp it into place with a wood clamp, and secure it to the rectangle by screwing two 3-inch screws through the 6-foot piece into the 22-inch piece. Repeat these steps to secure the other three 6-foot pieces to the other corners of the rectangle.

  7. Lower the next rectangle onto the four 6-foot pieces. This rectangle should sit 34 inches above the ground to make the second shelf.  Measure this distance and mark accordingly. Level the shelf at this height and clamp into place with wood clamps.  Repeat the process above of securing the rectangle to the 6-foot pieces with two 3-inch screws on each corner.

  8. Place the top shelf onto the frame. Level the rectangle, clamp into place, and secure
    with screws as above.
