How to Build a Wood Window Sash
A window sash is the part of a window that is moveable and contains the panes of glass. The most common types of sashes are hung windows. Modern windows have a single pane of glass in each sash but with a grid to give the allusion of an older style of window. Building your own windows sash will take time, but you can accomplish without any professional help.
- Cut a piece of wood that is larger than the original window sash. Usually 4 inches added to each dimension will be enough.
- Make note of every measurement of the old sash so you can make a template for the new sash using the wood you just cut. Plywood is usually used for the template, but there are several different ways to accomplish this.
- Begin cutting the different pieces needed to build the sash. The most common pieces that you will need to cut are the two side pieces, the top piece and the bottom piece. Each piece is going to be a different measurement depending on what the old sash's measurements were.
- Match the different pieces to the template you created making sure they are a tight fit. Mark the location of each piece on the template. Once you are sure that the measurements are correct, begin to assemble the pieces of the sash. Once everything has been glued together, you should set the sash inside the template to allow the glue to dry. The template will keep the sash from falling apart while the piece can still be moved.
- Add glass to your sash. Once the glue has dried, you will need to choose which type of glass that you want. Depending on where the window will be placed, the glass may be different than what was in the original sash.
