How to Make Wood Window Frames
A wooden window frame is essential in the installation of a window as it helps secure the window into its place. It can be done either in an existing wall or when a new wall is being constructed. A wooden window frame is basically a square or rectangular box and preparing one is a simple, uncomplicated process.
Things You’ll Need:
- 2x4 boards
- 2x12 boards
- 1/2 inch plywood
- Hammer
- Saw
- Tape measure
- Nails
- Measure the window opening’s width and height. Allow extra space for the header and sill when measuring the window opening.
- Use two 2x12 boards of lumber and one piece of 1/2 inch plywood to build the header beam. Cut the pieces according to your measurements and nail them together, making sure to have the plywood in the middle. The finished product should measure out to be 3 1/2 inches thick and 4-6 inches high.
- Prepare the sill with a 2x4 board piece. Cut the board piece to the same width as the header beam.
- Take the header beam and place it in between two pieces of plywood. The plywood needs to be the same height as the wall. Measure and cut two pieces of 2x4 board pieces that resemble the same length of the window and place them underneath the header against the longer 2x4 boards.
- Place the sill underneath the two 2x4 cut pieces and cut two additional pieces of 2x4 board pieces. These will be placed underneath the sill. To be accurate, measure the length from the bottom of the sill to determine how far the opening is going to be from the floor.
- Take all the pieces of the frame and nail them together. Attach the header beam to the longer 2x4 board pieces by nailing to two together. Also, nail the sill to the board pieces. The finished product will resemble a box.
