How to Build an Electric Kit Car
An electric kit car is a great opportunity to build some quality parent-child time, working on a project that is not only a lot of fun, but is also a good learning tool for a child. It develops mechanical skills, timing, and is a good educational experience.
What you will need:
Electric car kit, bowls, grease, soap, liquid thread lock, rubber foam, paint, screwdriver
Building the electric kit car:
- Go through the electric car kit manual with your child. Put the small screws into bowls so that they can be retrieved quickly. It's a good idea to apply a little soap to the thread of the screws to prevent over-tightening.
- Put a small amount of grease on the moving parts, including the gears. A good coat is sufficient for this purpose. If too much grease is added, it can cause the parts to dislodge when the car starts running.
- Fit the metal parts together tightly. Make sure that the parts are put together snugly. This will prevent vibration when the car is operating. Frame vibration can loosen the screws, causing the car to come apart. Thread lock can be added to the nuts and threads to prevent this.
- Make sure to measure the shocks and tire rods, and other parts where the length and size is important when cutting. Make sure to measure the parts prior to cutting, and re-check prior to the final cutting process. Try fitting them into place before fastening them.
- Place the receiver box into the electric car. This should be placed into a suitable location, which is smooth and away from the motor or moving parts.
- With soap and water, wash the parts that you will be painting. This will make the paint go on smoother and will prevent any chipping or peeling of the paint. Make sure that the parts are dry before painting.
- Paint the car, using the painter's tape to help make racing lines. Cover the paint with a clear gloss to bring out more shine.
- Assmble the parts to the chassis and body. Care should be taken to be sure that everything fits snugly and securely to avoid vibration once the car is running.
- Test drive the car on a smooth surface.
