How to Bury a Dead Bird

The passing of a pet can be a sad time for an individual or a family. Because of this, the pet should be treated with dignity after death. You can bury your dead bird and know that you treated it with respect.

Items you’ll need:

  • Gloves

  • Box

  • Shovel

  • Rock or marker

  • Sod or flowers

  1. When a bird has died, do not touch it. Although it is doubtful, you do not know if the bird is carrying any kind of disease. Take thick rubber gloves and put them on. Then, you can remove the bird from the cage or wherever you have found it.

  2. Place the dead bird in a box of some sort. You may find that a shoe box is the best size for a bird.

  3. Find a suitable place to bury the bird. You can bury it in your yard or in a field. Dig a hole about two feet deep. Then place the box inside of the hole and refill the hole with dirt. This is important for the sake of your health; a dead bird should be thoroughly underground in case it is the carrier of disease.

  4. Place a marker over the hole that you buried the bird. This will help you identify where you buried the bird. You can use a large stone or rock. You can also place a small statue or other marker on the spot. You may find it appropriate to either re-sod the spot that you dug up, or you may plant some flowers on the spot.
