How to Bustle a Wedding Dress

A bustle or any other alteration performed on a wedding dress is expensive. These expenses may run your wedding over budget. Depending on the tailor you choose, there is also the risk of delays. To avoid these complications, perform your alterations yourself.

How to Bustle a Wedding Dress:

Step 1: Decide which type of bustle to add to your wedding dress.

Step 2: Determine how you will attach your bustle to your wedding dress. This is a simple choice between hooks and buttons. According to experts, covered buttons are the most secure. However, these buttons are not suited for all bustles.

Step 3: Locate the center of the back portion of the wedding dress. Lay two buttons or hooks on each side of the center of the back portion. Place pins on each side where you laid the hooks or buttons. This will mark the position on the wedding dress for these buttons or hooks.

Step 4: Put your wedding dress on a dress form. Disconnect the middle portion of the skirt from the bodice. Do not remove the pins.

Step 5: Place the bustle points where you placed the pins in Step 3.

Step 6: Sew the buttons of hooks onto the bustle points. Sew loops of ribbons at each bustle point. Attach each loop to its corresponding bustle point. Put on your wedding dress to ensure that you have achieved your desired results.
