How to Buy Abandoned Storage Units
Buying an abandoned storage unit can give you some expensive items for a low cost. You can sell these items and make a profit. But, when attending an auction for an abandoned storage unit, you are taking a chance on the contents because you cannot see what is inside before you purchase the items.
- Locate an auction coming up in your city with abandoned storage units up for bid. You can typically find these auctions in print or Internet advertisements as well as calling local storage companies and inquiring about possible auctions coming up.
- Research the storage company first to find out what kind of area it is in and whether the company is reputable in the community. A simple Internet search can provide you with ratings and reviews of the company. This tells you whether it is worth it to buy an abandoned unit. Abandoned storage units in upscale neighborhoods might give you a chance at more expensive items.
- Plan to bring a truck or moving van with you to the auction along with a tarp and ropes to tie big items down. Because you don't know what items will be in the unit, you should be prepared for anything.
- Bring plenty of cash to the auction because most storage companies accept only cash. Bring along a photo ID and a lock in case you need to lock up the unit and come back for the belongings later. If you plan to sell the items, you will need to bring your Tax ID number.
- Arrive to the auction early because you probably will not be the only person bidding on the abandoned storage unit. Arriving at least 15 to 30 minutes early can be to your benefit because the storage unit administrator might allow those who arrive early to put in their bids before the auction begins.
- Ask the storage company about additional costs such as cleaning or maintenance fees associated with the unit before you make a bid. Also, be sure that the auction details the size of the storage unit before you place a bid.
