How to Buy Drapery Hardware
Drapery hardware serves as both a functional and decorative element for windows. Choosing the right hardware for window treatments adds style and finish to your windows and can set the decorative tone of your room. Before you buy drapery hardware, consider the type of window, curtain fabric, function and durability of the hardware material.
- Determine the style and function of the curtains. Decorative curtains stay open, and some curtains control light or privacy and must open and close.
- Choose where you want the curtains mounted, either on the inside or outside of the window frame. This narrows the options of hardware styles when selecting drapery hardware. Tension rods and metal adjustable rods attach to the inside of the window frame and are typically used for valances or fixed curtains. Decorative rods and brackets mount on the outside of the window frame and work as both decorative and functional.
- Measure each window and write down the measurements. Take measurements of the width of the inside of the window frame and width to the outside edges of the window frame. Add 2 to 5 inches for outside mount curtains, depending how wide you want the curtains to hang on the wall.
- Look for adjustable rods for flexibility and to forgive any measuring errors. Adjustable rods accommodate current curtains and can work with future curtain choices.
- Consider the type of fabric used for your curtains. Lightweight sheers or panels work on any type of rod. Heavy decorator fabrics require a substantial rod and bracket systems to hold the weight. Layered curtains require multiple rods and brackets.
- Visit home decor stores, model homes, decorative fabric stores and big-box retailers to view displays and samples of drapery hardware styles and mounting options. Look at the hardware finish, styles and decorative elements such as finials and tie-backs that go with the rods.
- Choose a rod with a diameter that accommodates the pocket in the curtain. Some curtains have a small pocket to slip the rod through; others have large pockets, grommets or tabs. If your curtain style requires rings and clips, take that into consideration.
- Purchase your curtain rods from home decor stores, big-box retailers or through online vendors. Use the keywords “curtain hardware” or “drapery hardware” in your search engine box to locate online retailers. Remember ordering online requires more accurate measurements, because returns can be a hassle.
