How to Find Used Auto Parts

How to Buy Used Auto Parts

Buying used auto parts can help the home mechanic save money on a repair job. Finding the right used part is not always easy. However, if you are meticulous and know the right places to look, you can find the parts that you need.

Use one or several of these steps to find the used parts that you need:

  • Find a used parts dealer in your area. Search MerchantCircle or another business listing site by entering "used auto parts" and your ZIP code. Call the used auto parts dealer and give him the year, make and model of your car. He will then be able to tell you if he has the part that you need.

  • Search through your newspaper's classified section in print or online to find local sellers. You can also search an online classified website such as Craigslist. A local, private seller may offer lower prices than a used parts store.

  • Visit an auto junkyard. Many times you can buy used parts right off of the cars. Find a car that has the piece that you need and make an offer. Most junkyards would rather make a few extra dollars off of a car before they junk it.

  • Go to an online auction site such as eBay. You will find a thriving used parts community online. Search for the exact part that you need, and the site will list all of the active auctions. Most sites give you the option to bid on parts or buy them immediately. Be careful to check the shipping price on the item before placing a bid; heavy items can incur large shipping charges.
