How to Calculate the Gas Price for a Road Trip

Gas is one of the biggest expenses a person will encounter on a road trip. It is a good idea to make sure you have enough money to put gas in the car before going out on the road. With some research, math and time you can find out about how much it will cost to buy enough gas for a road trip.

Items needed:

  • Computer with Internet

  • Calculator

  1. Calculate the total number of miles that will be driven on the trip using an online map service. Use a calculator to add the distance to your destination, the distance you’ll have to drive to get back home and any extra miles for driving around to different locations.

  2. Divide the total number of miles being driven round trip by the average number of miles your vehicle gets per gallon of gasoline with the calculator. If you’re not sure about your car’s fuel economy, it can be found online. This will tell you how many gallons of gas you’ll need for the trip.

  3. Go online to find the United States national average for a gallon of gasoline. Many people use unleaded. If you prefer a higher grade of fuel make sure to get the average price for that type of fuel. Some vehicles also require diesel fuel, which is generally higher priced.

  4. Multiply the average price per gallon by the number of gallons needed for the trip with the calculator. This will be the total amount you’ll need to include in your budget for gasoline. It is a good idea to include some extra funds if possible. Even with today’s technologies, it is still possible to get lost and use extra fuel driving around. Running out of gas in an unfamiliar area can be stressful and even dangerous.
