How to Calm Puffy Eyes
Puffy eyes can be caused by stress, allergies, lack of sleep and a variety of other ailments. While this swelling is usually not a serious condition, it can be an irritating cosmetic affliction for many people. The good news, however, is that puffy eyes can be easily treated in a variety of unique ways.
- Apply a cold compress to your eyes. Cold acts to constrict the blood vessels, so that fluid flow to the tissue is reduced; this can enable swelling to go down.
- Use a natural astringent, such as sliced cucumber or potato, to help with swelling. An astringent acts to shrink or constrict the tissues, helping to lessen the puffiness. Place thin slices over the eyes and gently press down so that they make contact with the swollen tissue. If desired, you can also freeze the slices to combat puffy eyes with both an astringent and the cold.
- Sleep with your head elevated. By raising your head, fluids are less likely to collect in your head and contribute to puffy eyes. An extra pillow or two can do the trick.
- Change your diet. A diet high in salt causes your body to hold onto additional fluids. Reducing your salt intake helps your body to release fluids. A low-carb diet is also recommended as it can prevent your body from retaining water.
- Ensure that you are getting a balanced diet full of vitamins. Vitamins A, C and E are known to help decrease puffy eyes and contribute to skin health.
- Apply eye patches that are infused with retinol and ginseng to the area under the eyes. The ingredients also help to reduce wrinkles and tighten the skin.
- Gently massage around the eyes. Take your middle fingers and trace circles around the eyes, moving your fingers out toward the ends of the eyebrows above the eyes and toward the bridge of the nose below the eyes.
- Visit your doctor if your puffy eyes persist. This can be a symptom of a more serious medical condition.
