How to Capture More Storage Space
Living in a smaller space can be cozy, quaint and much cheaper than a large home, but
oftentimes can present a problem when it comes to storage. With the desire to buy more but also hold on to our precious belongings, it becomes a necessity to invent creative ways of finding storage space.
- Use existing furnishings or purchase ones with built in storage space. Trunks and chests are great to use as coffee tables and offer much storage space inside. Ottomans, conventionally designed to act as a stool or coffee table, now often are constructed with an enclosed storage space to stow away anything from blankets to toys. When purchasing new furniture, look for pieces with drawers already built in so that storage is a breeze.
- Take advantage of space under the bed. Specially designed storage containers are made to slide under the bed and can be used to store additional bedding, clothes or anything you desire. Bed risers can also be used to create additional space, generally lifting the bed three to eight inches to accommodate larger storage containers.
- Compartmentalize your life with baskets and canvas containers. Baskets, made of wicker or metal, can act as easy and quick organizers that allow you to toss things inside while still looking great. Inexpensive canvas containers can be lined up on bookshelves to stow away paperwork or toys and come in fun colors and patterns that can accentuate any room.
- Go up to your attic or down to the basement. These forgotten spaces offer great storage for seasonal items that you only need once or twice a year.
- Let the air out! Space saver bags can shrink the size of bedding, towels, pillows, and those thick winter coats. If only used when guests are over or when the temperature drops, why not give yourself a little more room for the things you use on a daily basis?
- Install additional shelving in pantries, closets, or on walls. Oftentimes shelves can be made too far apart so much space is lost in between. By adding an additional ledge in between two existing shelves, you can double your storage space.
