How to Change Storage Space Allocation

Some versions of Windows give you the ability to manage the hard drive space that is allocated to each user. This is to make sure that you never run out of storage on your computer. This is the storage space allocation, and can be changed in the advanced drive properties menu.

  1. Click the Start button in the lower left corner of the screen, click My Computer in Windows XP, or Computer in Windows Vista or Windows 7. The Computer window opens.

  2. Right-click the Local Disk C hard disk to be changed, and then click Properties from the side menu to open the Properties window.

  3. Click the Quota tab on the far right, and then check the Enable quota management check box.

  4. Check the Limit disk space check box, and type a number next to it. Select GB (gigabytes) from the drop down menu.

  5. Configure the threshold of when you will receive a warning when approaching the limit you set in the Set warning level to box.

  6. Check the Deny disk space to users exceeding quota limit check box, if you desire. Checking this box can cause programs to become unstable, such as your web browser. Check the Log event when a user exceeds their quota limit check box.

  7. Click the Quota entries button at any time if you want to see the disk space utilization for each computer user set up on your computer.

  8. Click the Apply button at the bottom of the window to save the changes, and then click OK to close the window.
