How to Care for Costume Wigs

Costume wigs are usually made out of synthetic material, which requires a different approach when compared to the method of caring for human hair wigs. These types of wigs are typically worn temporarily for a themed event, such as a Halloween party.

Things You Will Need:

  • Costume wig

  • Wide tooth comb

  • Ponytail holders

  • Hair clips

  • Detangling spray

  • Wig shampoo

  • Towel

  1. Detangle the hair with a comb by separating it into sections. It is easier to separate the hair so that you can focus on one portion of the wig at a time, without becoming too overwhelmed and creating more of a tangled mess. Use ponytail holders or hair clips to accomplish this.

  2. Apply detangling spray and work out the tangles starting at the bottom and moving toward the top. You can find this type of product at your local beauty supply store in the section for weave and wig care. Repeat this process on each section of the wig until you have detangled the entire wig.

  3. Wash the wig with diluted wig shampoo. This product can also be found in the weave and wig care section of your local beauty supply store. Make sure that you are washing the hair with cold water to prevent any further damage from occurring due to hot water.

  4. Squeeze excess water out of wig with a towel and allow the wig to dry overnight. When the hair is drying, make sure that it is sitting on a fresh, dry towel so that the towel can help soak up any leftover water.
