How to Care for a Stoneware Crock

Stoneware crockery is a durable way to store liquids or foods. It can keep items cold or warm because of its excellent insulation properties. Stone crockery has been so well made that many pieces are now collectable antiques. With proper care, stoneware crocks can last for generations.

  • Inspect the crockery for damage. Small cracks and hairline fractures can become big problems when the crock is placed in water. If there is noticeable damage, do not attempt to clean the crock without the help of an expert.

  • Never put stoneware crockery in the dishwasher. The extreme heat of the dishwasher can damage the glaze and design. The heat can also cause cracks to form.

  • Do not expose crockery to extreme temperature changes. Moving the crock from a warm stove into cold sink water can cause cracks.

  • Handle crockery with two hands. Stoneware crockery is heavy and should be moved as little as possible to reduce the chance of its being dropped. Always have a destination chosen before handling crockery.

  • Retire the stoneware crock. Because some stoneware crockery pieces are antique collectables, consider putting the piece on display. The more the crockery is used, the greater the chances it will begin to crack and flake.

  • Never allow water to freeze in the crockery. The water will expand and cause cracks and splitting.

  • Use a small amount of water to hand clean the stoneware crock. Place a cloth in the bottom of the sink, and place the crock on the cloth. Fill the crock with a few inches of water and dish soap. Scrub away dirt gently with your hands. Use a toothbrush to scrub stubborn dirt.
