How to Catch Redfish by Sight Fishing

How to Catch a Redfish on a Fly Rod

Redfish have particular habits and are easily spooked.  Catching redfish on a fly rod requires a lot of patience and wading in the water.  Using a fly rod for catching redfish can be better described as hunting instead of fishing. Fishing with a fly rod requires more skill than fishing with a spinning rod.  If you are ready for a bit of a challenge the rewards can be great.

  1. Locate a flat area with clear water, few weeds or grass and feeding Redfish.  You may also notice Mullet jumping out of the water to avoid the more aggressive redfish.

  2. Cast your fly towards the general location of the Redfish.  The idea is to case your fly towards the school of redfish so it lands within a few feet.  Casting into the school or over it will scare the fish.

  3. Drag your fly towards you making sure is passes in front of the school. Give a sharp tug on your fly occasionally and wait for the Redfish to strike.

  4. Continue this process until you hook into a Redfish.  If this process does not work in your current area, begin looking for another school of feeding Redfish.  If you begin getting a lot of grass on your fly, consider using a weedless fly, hook guard or relocate to a new section of fishing ground.

  5. Consider casting your fly from a further distance, change the fly or change your retrieve if you continue to have no luck.  Try retrieving your the fly as slow as possible and take notice of how the fly enters the water if you are using a crab pattern.
