How to Change Your Internet Service Provider

Changing your Internet service provider takes a bit of planning, if you don't want to be without service in between switching providers. There are steps you should take in a certain order to accomplish this, but they are fairly simple and guarantee you stay online seamlessly.

  1. Find the customer service phone number for your old Internet service provider. It will be on a bill, in the phone book or found on their web site.

  2. Get your account and service with your new Internet service provider before you cancel your old one so your Internet service is not interrupted, unless that does not matter.

  3. Have your customer or account number handy for the service you want to cancel, as you will need to provide it.

  4. Call the customer service number of the service you want to cancel. You will most likely have to speak to a representative to cancel.

  5. Give the requested information to the customer service representative. This includes your name and address and account number. They may ask why you want to cancel or switch.

  6. Explain to the representative that you have a new Internet service provider and need to cancel and close your account immediately. They may try to talk you into staying with them, but just explain that you've already switched.

  7. Ask for a confirmation number, if desired. They usually provide one as proof that you called to make changes to your account.

  8. Do pay the final bill for your pro-rated service so nothing negative shows up on your credit report.
