How to Choose Freshwater Pet Fish
Choosing freshwater pet fish goes beyond going to the store picking out a few fish and putting them in the aquarium. You have to make sure the fish you select are compatible with others. Meaning the water temperature is the same as well as the PH level, and after you have taken care of all this think about the color and other features of the fish.
- Buy your fish tank based on how much space you have allotted and the amount of fish you will keep. Consider how much water you will need as well, generally one fish need a gallon of water.
- Get some fresh water and fill the tank. Add all the equipment necessary to have the tank functioning properly. Leave the tank running for three or four weeks to ensure that all the equipment is functioning properly. Check the lights, thermometers, heater and filters to see if they are working okay and your fish will not have any problems surviving in the tank.
- Check your tank water temperature generally a novice tank should average around 75 degrees Fahrenheit with an average PH of 7. However, you should establish your temperature and PH level based on the fish you selected so make sure you did your research thoroughly. This way you do not have to worry about killing your fish after you have them.
- Select different freshwater fish for your tank. Make sure you have top feeders, middle feeders as well as bottom feeders in the tank as this creates balance and also provide a clean and healthy environment.
- Compile a list of the fish you want to buy and take this information to your local fish shop or a fish specialist.
- Look at the fish you are considering in the fish shop and ask the sales associate any questions you may have about the fish you want.
- Select only fish that has a healthy appearance and look happy. If the fish at the store looks dull and lifeless, choose another store to buy your fish.
