How to Choose Laptops and Computers
Selecting a new computer system can be difficult—there are so many different types with various capabilities, prices and features. Which is right for you? It is estimated that the average computer or laptop only lasts two to five years, so it is likely that you will be choosing many computers throughout your lifetime. There are many ways to find a machine that will suit your needs.
- Decide if you want your computer system to be portable. Desktop computers obviously are not meant to be taken with you whereas laptops can fit in almost any bag. While you may pay a little more for a comparable machine that is portable, you may want the luxury of working on your computer at any location.
- Determine what you will be using the computer for. If you just want to check your email and surf the web, you probably don’t need a large hard drive whereas if you intend on storing lots of music, movies and photographs on your computer you may need a larger hard drive to accommodate all of the data. Memory may also be a factor when selecting a computer. Unlike a hard drive that stores things permanently, memory only stores short bits of information temporarily. If you want to run lots of programs at once, consider finding a machine with more memory.
- Ask yourself if you are a Mac or PC user. Many people find it difficult to make the switch and like to stay with what they are used to. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but if you don’t like change, it may be best to stay with what you have been using.
- Identify any special features you may want. Do you need multiple USB ports for connecting lots of devices? Are you going to be watching a lot of movies on your computer and want nice graphics? Some things may be more important than others as you choose your computer system.
- Choose a price range in which you are willing to shop. Computer systems can be as cheap as a few hundred dollars or as expensive as thousands of dollars. Determining what your price limit is will help limit your options and make it easier for you to make a selection.
