How to Choose What High School Courses to Take
Signing up for high school courses signifies the beginning of a new semester. Knowing what courses to take before sign up begins can assist the student in a speedy registration process. Students should take courses they need for graduation. Making a plan for high school courses can ensure the student graduates on time.
- Know what you need for graduation. Talk with your school counselor to determine which remaining required courses you have. Give these courses priority.
- Determine your electives. Students are required to take a certain amount of electives throughout their high school career. Choose electives that interest you. For example, many schools offer drama, art or home economics.
- Do not overload yourself. If you need advanced science and math courses to graduate, try to spread them out over two semesters. Identify your academic weaknesses, and give yourself time to study for difficult courses. Choose one or two difficult courses per semester and several easier courses.
- Don't worry about your friends. While it can be tempting to sign up for the same classes as your friends, they may not need the same requirements to graduate. Only take the class if it is needed as a core course or elective.
- Make sure you have the prerequisites. Some courses may require certain prerequisites. For example, you may not be able to take Spanish II if you have not successfully passed Spanish I.
- Prepare for college. If you are thinking about college and have a major in mind, take classes to help with the major. For example, if you want to study pre-law, take writing composition courses, statistics and speech.
