How to Choose a Dog Crate
As one of the most expensive purchases you make for your dog, choosing the proper crate is an important decision. Dogs learn to consider their crate to be a sanctuary, and it may end up a place your dog spends quite a bit of time. Choosing the proper kennel features allow you to make a single purchase instead of buying new ones as your dog’s needs change.
- Choose a crate based on your dog’s adult size. You can add dividers to make the space smaller for a puppy, eliminating the need to purchase another larger crate when your dog matures. The crate should be large enough for your dog to stand up comfortably and able to stretch out completely when lying down.
- Look for a crate easy to assemble and disassemble. As circumstances change, you may find yourself moving the crate or storing it on occasion. Look for one with easy snap closures and that does not require special tools to take apart.
- Consider ease of cleaning when selecting a kennel. Dog crates can become soiled, especially in the puppy stages when accidents happen. Porous surfaces such as wood can become home for bacteria and odors, so look for a crate that has smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces.
- Choose a crate sturdy enough. Match your crate to your dog’s strength to be sure it can safely contain him as he gets older.
- Choose the proper style for your climate and dog. Long-haired dogs, or dogs who spend time in hotter temperatures, benefit from a crate with wire sides. Plastic crates are suitable when heat is not an issue, and can provide a greater feel of security since they are more enclosed.
