How to Clean a Dog Crate

Most dog crates are frequently used and as a result, can get very dirty over time.  Keeping your dog’s crate clean prevents harmful bacteria and offensive odors from taking hold, and keep your dog’s skin and fur clean, as well.  Depending on how quickly it gets dirty, a kennel should receive a thorough cleaning at least three to four times per year.

Things You Will Need

  • Stiff brush

  • Sponge or rag

  • Mild detergent

  • Bucket of water

  • Hose

  • Towel

  • Antibacterial spray

  1. Remove crate accessories such as blankets and toys.  These need to be washed as well.

  2. Disassemble the crate for easy access to the entire interior.

  3. Remove dirt and debris with a stiff cleaning brush.  Caked on dirt may need to be soaked for a few minutes in order to get it completely clean.  You can easily soak small spots by placing warm wet rags on them.

  4. Mix detergent and water, and then thoroughly wash the interior and exterior of the crate with a sponge or rag dipped in the soapy water.  Dish soap or vinegar are both excellent choices for this type of tough cleaning.

  5. Rinse the crate completely with a hose and check for any missed stains.  Repeat step four as needed, until all soiled areas are clean. If the crate was very dirty to begin with, you may need to wash it two or three times to get it completely clean again.

  6. Dry the crate with a towel to be able to use it immediately.  If you have the time and the weather is nice, air drying in the sun will provide additional disinfecting.

  7. Spray some antibacterial for a thorough, deep cleaning.
