How to Clean Clogged Gutters
A lot of people don’t even think about their gutters until they become clogged. Water will become streaming off of the roof during a heavy rainfall instead of flowing through the gutter and down the downspout. This can be problematic if you don’t take a little time and energy to learn how to clean your clogged gutters.
- Ask someone to help you keep the ladder steady and to hand you the garden hose whenever you need it.
- Place the ladder by the problematic downspout.
- Make sure that the ladder is level and not going to slip.
- Bend a wire coat hanger to fit down your downspout. You can use it to break up the debris that is causing a blockage.
- Climb your ladder to the roof, armed with the wire hanger and a bucket. You can put the leaves and debris into the bucket. If you are not comfortable carrying a bucket up a ladder, simply put the coat hanger in your pocket and then toss the debris on the ground to clean up later.
- Look at the gutters and remove any visible debris.
- Poke the wire down the downspout to loosen any debris that may be lodged therein.
- Shoot water down the downspout to make sure that it is clear. If it is blocked, use a plumbing snake to clean it out before shooting water down it again.
- Continue this process until the gutter is clear and clean.
