How to Clean Fishing Equipment

When you fish, the equipment you use will become very dirty from the murky water, fish and bait you use to catch your fish. You can learn how to properly clean your fishing equipment by following a few simple steps.

  1. Find a long flat surface to clean your fishing gear on. A long table or bench top is ideal because they are long enough to place your pole and other equipment on it.

  2. Wipe the reel of your pole off with a hot, soapy washcloth in order to remove the oil and salt that has built up on the area.

  3. Place all of your tackle in a large bucket filled with a mixture of warm water and vinegar. The vinegar will remove any smells and thick buildup from the tackle.

  4. Remove the handle from your fishing pole and clean the handle and area underneath with warm, soapy water until it is clean.

  5. Place your fishing hooks in a small clear bowl filled with hot water. Be sure to use a clear bowl so you can locate the hooks easily when you are ready to remove them from the water.

  6. Clean your tackle box with a warm, damp washcloth while your tackle is soaking in the mixture of water and vinegar.

  7. Apply any lube that is needed for the handle, reel and bearing of the fishing pole.

  8. Dry all of the cleaned pieces with a dry clean cloth before replacing them in their proper place on your pole or in the tackle box.
