How to Clean Mold From Leather

Mold can easily appear on the leather. It is noticeable by black spots. Green, white or gray spots are also signs of mold. It can be disheartening to see mold on fine leather. The good news is that the object does not have to be replaced. Killing the mold can be easily done on leather but a small spot must be tested to avoid damaging the item.

How to Clean Mold From Leather


Materials Needed



  • Tarp

  • Plastic gloves

  • Mask

  • Cloth

  • Toothbrush

  • Leather cleaner

  • Water

  • Bucket

  • Brush with soft bristles


1. Take the item outside so the mold is not spread any further during the cleaning process. Make sure a tarp is placed underneath the item.


2. Put on plastic gloves to keep the mold from coming in contact with the mold. You also want to wear a mask so you do not inhale the mold spores.


3. Wet a cloth and go over the item to remove most of the mold. Do not reuse the cloth at any point after you go over the time. Throw the cloth away immediately after it is used.


4. Wet a toothbrush and clean in the cracks and crevices of the item. Throw the toothbrush away after it is used.


5. Mix the leather cleaner and water in a bucket. Use a clean cloth to go over the leather item. Next use a brush with soft bristles to go over the item once again.


6. Allow the leather item to dry. Move the item to an area outside that does not get direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause the leather to fade.
