How to Clean Moldy Dishes

It is highly recommended that dishes be washed and dried as soon as possible after use to prevent food scraps on them from molding. If you discover that mold has formed on some of your dishes there is a way to easily remove it.

  1. Hold the molded dish over the trashcan and use a soft bristled brush to scrape the mold off the surface. Make sure you do not use a brush that is too stiff because you do not want to ruin the pattern on the dishes. It is highly recommended that you do this outside of the house to prevent mold spores from spreading to other surfaces in the home.

  2. Put the plug in the kitchen sink and fill it with hot water and add some dishwashing detergent of your choice.

  3. Pour in a cup of household bleach into the water in the sink.

  4. Place the molded dishes in the hot water and allow them to soak for at least 20 minutes.

  5. Pull the plug in the sink and let the water drain out after the soaking time has lapsed.

  6. Put the plug back in the sink and fill it with warm water and add some dishwashing detergent.

  7. Use a sponge or soft towel wash the dishes as normal. You can also wash the dishes in the dishwasher if you prefer not to wash them by hand.

  8. Use a soft towel to dry the dishes off if you washed them by hand.

  9. Check the dishes thoroughly for any mold that may be still on the dishes. If there is no sign of mold the dishes can be put away.
