How to Clean Patio Stone

Stone patios are a great place to relax outside and chat with friends or enjoy a BBQ. Although stone patios are beautiful, they can be difficult to clean at time. The cracks between the stones can easily trap dirt and grime, and can also act as a safe haven for weeds. Power washers are the best way to clean a stone patio thoroughly.

Items Needed:

  • Outdoor broom

  • Pressure washer

  • Water hose

  • Cleaning liquid or chemicals

Step 1: Remove any patio furniture, plants, flower boxes and other decorations from your patio. It is important to remove these things so that the entire area of the patio can be cleaned without having to move the items one at a time to clean under or around them.

Step 2: Use an outdoor broom to sweep any dust and debris from the porch. If there is large debris on the porch, you may want to pick it up with your hand and place it in a trash can. Dust and small debris like leaves can be swept into your yard or driveway.

Step 3: Look in between each stone for any weeds, grass or debris. Remove these items with your hands and throw them in a trash can. Spray weed killer in between the stones to kill the weed that are there and prevent more from growing. Weed killer can be purchased from most major department stores.

Step 4: Rent or purchase a power washer from your local home improvement store. Many home improvement stores will ask for a small deposit on the pressure washer. When you return the pressure washer to the home improvement store, they will refund your deposit to you.

Step 5: Turn the pressure washer on and spray the stone patio. Spray in a straight line from one end of the patio to the end that touches your driveway or yard. This will help move the dirt off the patio. If too much dust is being raised, turn the pressure washer off and use your water hose to wet the patio before continuing the pressure wash it.

Step 6: Add the chemicals or cleaning liquid to your power washer. Spray the liquid onto the patio. Be sure to spray in between the stones and any cracks. Be careful not to spray your grass or flowers as the chemicals could harm or kill them.

Step 7: Empty the chemicals or cleaning liquid from the pressure washer and attach it to your water source. Turn the power washer on and spray the stones to rinse the chemicals and cleaner off the patio. Again spray in one direction. Rinse your patio furniture and decorations before returning them to the stone patio.
