How to Paint Alloy Wheels

How to Clean Stained Alloy Wheels

Alloy wheels are an attractive upgrade to traditional hubcap wheels.  The wheels are made from aluminum or magnesium, which makes them lightweight without sacrificing strength.  Cleaning your wheels will help you properly maintain your alloy wheels and extend their light.  Break dust, dirt, oil, and other fluids from your car can stain your wheels and make them look dirty.

If you want to clean your wheels properly without dulling the shine or scratching the surface, start with a mild cleaner, and then work your way to more powerful cleaners as needed.

  1. Begin with standard cleaning staples – warm water, and a mild dish detergent.  Wet the wheel first, and then use a rag to remove as much of the dirt and grease as you can.  Scrub aggressively and ensure that you work up a good lather.  Do not use a stiff brush as you could scratch the surface, which leaves the potential for rust.  Dry the wheels thoroughly.  If the wheels are now clean, you are finished, otherwise, proceed to step 2.

  2. Examine the wheels thoroughly.  If some dirt and grime remain, it is time to use something stronger.  Select a car shampoo product for stage two of the washing.  Wet the wheel again, and select another clean rag to wash it.  Be certain to clean between any spokes or crevices.  Once you have thoroughly soaped the wheel, rinse, and dry.  Examine the wheel again to determine if any stains remain.  If additional cleaning is required, proceed to step 3.

  3. Determine the type of stain that is present on the wheel.  Depending on the stain, purchase a cleaner that is specifically designed to deal with that type of stain.  Follow the directions on the cleaner in order to apply the product to the wheel.  Examine the wheel again.  If stains still remain, re-apply the stain cleaner taking care to follow the directions completely.
